tallis

At Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Synagogue, congregants contributed threads from their own blankets, shawls, scarves, blankets, and curtains which Alissa wove into a community tallit. The tallit will be used for group aliyot and weddings.

Alissa enjoys weaving with groups as a means to foster community while creating meaningful works of art. In Spring of 2004, Alissa worked with the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center of East Hills, NY to create four tapestries, together entitled "The Tapestry of Jewish Time, that reflect the four seasons and the Jewish holidays that occur in that season. The JCC found that weaving "is a beautiful way to involve all members of the community in creative expression that helps unify and bring everyone together." Each distinct group at the JCC was assigned a different them: Early Childhood to winter, Special Needs Groups to Spring, Adult Groups to summer and Teans to fall. Everyone helped by sketching desgins and weaving part of the tapestries."

Alissa has also worked with schools to create beautiful, and spiritually important, wall hangings, including a large tallit made out of children's t-shirts.
